Let me introduce myself

I live on the Island of Guernsey which takes about 75 minutes to ride around at at steady pace.  My passion for cycling started in 1994 when I was introduced to mountain biking.  Before that I played hockey and ran cross country for the Island.

I ride for Scienceinsport.com which not only has the best kit in cycling but some great team mates.

I am passionate about cycling.  It has become a way of life for me.  I have found it a fascinating sport with so many variables and always providing an opportunity to try something different and to learn something new.
Coaching has been a rewarding way for me to pass on my knowledge and my passion for the sport.  I like to use my experience to guide cyclists to personal achievements, whether they are to reach international standing or complete their first 10 mile time trial.

I am always looking at ways to improve my coaching skills; I believe it is important that coaches do not become complacent in their knowledge and are prepared to look outside of the box.  I have always continued to work on my coaching skills and learn from my own experiences as well as the experiences of the riders I coach.

What makes a good coach?

I believe one of the most important ingredients needed to be a good coach is to recognise each rider's individual needs, attributes and limiting factors.  It is not possible to treat each rider the same, either physically or mentally.

A good coach also has a wealth of experience and this should be in different disciplines and at high levels.  This means that the coach is "talking from experience" and not purely a text book.  It helps if you have 'been there..done that'.

A good coach must have a range of skills and knowledge, good nutritional knowledge, tactical awareness, race preparation, recovery, good communication skills.

A good coach should also guide their rider in entering events which they are well suited to.  These may be events that the rider has not even considered.

If you have different thoughts or additional views on what makes a good coach, please feel free to e-mail me.
